The holidays are upon us at last, and after a challenging year, we need a little holiday celebration more than we ever have before. But before you deck the halls or hang your stockings by the tree, don’t forget to be extra careful during the holidays so you can enjoy a safe and healthy new year.

In this post from Value Plus Insurance serving Minnesota and Wisconsin, we’re sharing our favorite insurance company pro advice for staying safe during the holidays. Give us a call to discuss insurance options for your home and family for a great start in the coming year.

1.   Make Your Car Winter Safe

Winter storms and ice can lead to accidents that damage your car or cause personal injury. Make sure your car insurance is up-to-date before getting out in inclement weather. Additionally, don’t forget to check your antifreeze, tires, and wiper blades. Be sure to put emergency supplies in the back of your vehicle in case you break down. Blankets, emergency water, snacks, flares, cat litter, and a spare tire are all good choices for your vehicle emergency kit.

2.   Check Your Attic Insulation

Poorly insulated attics can lead to ice dam formation, a leading cause of roof damage. When the heat inside your home rises, it can transfer to your roof, where it melts the snow and ice on top. This newly melted water refreezes when it reaches the edge of your roof, causing damage to your shingles and gutters.

3.   Be Careful With Fire Safety

The risk of fire always increases during the winter months. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day always see a marked increase in fires due to candles. Another common holiday fire danger occurs when real Christmas trees dry out and ignite.

Additionally, be extra cautious with space heaters and cooking. Never leave candles, cooking, or heaters unattended, and be sure to regularly test your carbon monoxide detectors. Finally, keep a fire extinguisher handy if you’re using the fireplace or kitchen.

4.   Dispose of Holiday Gift Boxes Carefully

During the holiday season, burglary and theft home insurance claims are always on the rise. Don’t make your home an easy target by placing big-ticket holiday packaging in your trash or recycling, and avoid leaving windows open where prying eyes can look in and check out your Christmas treasures.
