It’s not the end of world if you are ordered by a judge to obtain an SR-22 certificate. Generally, if you receive a DUI, a driving after suspension or are cited for a handful of other major driving infractions-you will be required to get the certificate.

An SR-22 is a certificate is basically a printed document which is added to your insurance policy and provides proof to the state that you have current insurance.  Your normal insurance ID card, or declarations page is not sufficient.  The SR-22 is either faxed or emailed directly from the insurer (not your insurance agent to the DMV. (Department of Motor Vehicles)

The news that no one loves to hear is that, yes, the SR-22 adds a bit of cost to your auto insurance.  The good news is that depending on your situation, it may only be needed for 6 months to a maximum of three years. It is important that if you are required to get an SR-22, that you check with the state and find out exactly how long it must be in force.  Your insurance agency will not know this information. There is no point in over paying for something you don’t need.

There are some insurance companies which take a lot of time to issue and send the certificate to the state. Our agency uses a number of carriers which can have you up and driving within 4 hours of time. We want our insureds to have a hassle free experience.  There is nothing more frustrating than trying to get your license reinstated and making the trip to licensing bureau and finding out the document hasn’t been sent. We make it a point to let our customers know when the document has been delivered to the DMV.

Everyone makes mistakes. It’s not the end of the world. Before you realize it, the SR-22 will be a jumble of letters and numbers that you have long forgotten about.”
