Take a walk around your neighborhood and you’ll see a world filled with the signs of autumn. From falling leaves to pumpkin-filled porches, it’s that time of year when we’re all looking forward to kids in costumes, Thanksgiving, and soon enough, Christmastime. While you’re starting to plan ahead for holiday shopping and family celebrations, it’s also important to add one more thing to your list: open enrollment.

Every year, open enrollment is the 45-day period when individuals can enroll in or change their health insurance plans. In this post from Value Plus Insurance, we’ll answer some common questions about open enrollment. Give us a call to learn about insurance options and get your new policy in place for the coming year.

What is Open Enrollment?

Open enrollment is the limited period each year when individuals are able to change policies or enroll in a new health insurance plan outside of Medicaid and special enrollment periods. This applies to individual Marketplace plans on Healthcare.gov and state exchanges. On the other hand, Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) can be enrolled in at any time. A special enrollment period is an exception due to a qualifying event in an individual’s life.

These are all examples of special enrollment events:

●        The birth of a new baby

●        Getting married

●        Losing health coverage from an employer

2021 Open Enrollment

Each year, the open enrollment period runs from November through mid-December. For 2021, the open enrollment period will run from Sunday, November 1st through Tuesday, December 15th. Plans purchased during this period will begin on January 1st of 2021 and run through December 31st of the same year. If you miss this enrollment window, you will only be able to enroll again with a qualifying special enrollment event.

Choosing the right policy can be challenging. An experienced health insurance brokerage agent can help you decide which policy is best suited for your individual health needs.
